I am enjoying engineering these projections but it is difficult to capture them in a photograph. I am working out this idea on a much larger scale, although with fabric, that goes against the law of gravity. Wish me luck!

"To Their Watery Graves ..."

I've had the pleasure of being invited to participate in an art exhibit for which the theme is any interpretation of "Traveling Soles."

I chose to exercise poetic and phonetic license (with the curators' blessing) by interpreting the idea as Travelling Souls and, thus, this piece was born.

The image has been seared in my mind for years; I only hope I did it justice.

The catalog for the "Sightlines" show is out just in time for the inaugural event in Houston, TX this week.

About a year ago, fourteen artists were invited to create an installation of artworks featuring a sightline linking all the work in the exhibit. Each artist chose her own theme and created anywhere from five to eight artworks, including four 8x8" linking pieces, covering a total of ten feet in width each.

I just got back from hanging a second piece in Rock Hill's new Performance Center for the Arts. Here it is flanked by Katie Medlock, Technology Coordinator for the Arts Council of York County. Thanks also to Harriet (and Martin!) Goode for having me again!

The piece is titled "Venezuelan Symphony" and I made it as a tribute to my beloved homeland. Be sure to click to enlarge so as to better see the hand-dyed fabrics. This is one of several works that will be featured in a spread in the soon-to-be-released book "1000 Artisan Textiles" that I recently wrote about in this post.

Thinking back to when as a teen I fantasized about what I would do in life, who I might become, where I might go, what I might achieve, led me to put some of those feelings into this piece, not with a sense of regret but, rather, the realization that letting go of some things allowed me to achieve others, perhaps unimaginable at the time.

compositional conversation

I have had the distinct pleasure of being invited to participate in a project called "Compositional Conversation." In the words of its creator, artist Terry Jarrard-Dimond, this is a "project designed to create dialogue between artists and a textile construction, artists to artists and hopefully, artist to audience... The concept is simple: A composition made of fabric is begun and then passed from artist to artist..." Terry goes on to explain the process in detail.

She has set up a blog specifically for this social, textile experiment. I hope you will visit it and follow the process along with the participants and, last but not least, add your thoughts to the conversation by going here.

It has been difficult to photograph this work because the dark tones are very, very rich and intense, while the lighter ones are almost diaphanous. Be sure to click on each photo to enlarge it and that might help get a better feeling for the piece.

The inspiration is, again, the wild landscape of Venezuela along the shores of the mighty Orinoco River.

The tallest waterfall in the world, Salto Angel or Angel Falls, is located in Venezuela's jungle. I have explored it by canoe and on foot and these are the colors of that wild landscape -- the roaring foam rising high above the tree-tops framing the spectacular view.

This is my memory of the beautiful plains (llanos) of Venezuela when crossed on horseback -- land as far as the eyes can see, flowering trees, rivers, birds -- nature's symphony. Every note, from dark to light, interpreted in cloth.

I made a large piece of felt from scratch for this piece using some lovely Merino wool that I also dyed, the main rust-colored section you see. I also dyed the section on the top right using rust shavings. The idea for this piece is my own recollection of trips to the jungle in Venezuela and canoe rides along the Orinoco river; its waters are clear but the iron ore deposits of the area color the bottom sand and the surrounding jungle. That was the springboard for my color selection.

This piece showcases illustrations drawn directly onto the fabric, screen printing, and all-over free-motion stitching that echoes and complements the drawings. The bound border is also hand-painted.

rock hill

I made this piece to celebrate my beautiful new home, the City of Rock Hill, South Carolina. "Scat" refers to a form of Jazz singing that I like very much in which improvised, meaningless syllables are sung to a melody. The strong, irregular shapes and stitched lines of this piece recall the sharp lines of the stony hills that gave the city its name.

it's a wrap

I made this wrap using the needle-felting machine. The fiber is alpaca. I grabbed a handful of fibers to start and, patiently, needle-felted them until they meshed and locked with one another into 'something' other than individual, fly-away hairs. Eventually, from the single to the whole! 'Eventually' translated into roughly 2.5 hours per square inch. It is simply a dream to wear and I am quite proud of it. Here are several views, including a detail shot.

My name is Fulvia Boriani Luciano and I am an artist residing in South Carolina, USA.

Using my own photographs and illustrations as a starting point for my art, I paint, print and stitch cloth, layering bold lines, brush strokes, graffiti, and raw edges. One of the biggest attractions I find in this type of work is the physical process of creating texture through the use of stitching or by making hand-drawn marks on the cloth. The rhythm of repetition and variation that ensues induces a meditative, labour intensive state in which pattern and image become both symbolic language and structure. The complexity of each artwork's construction means that a single piece may take many weeks or even months to complete.

My work has been shown nationally and abroad, in juried exhibitions and galleries, is included in private collections, and is also in print.
